Ford EcoSport, Detailed Review, The Fun to Drive Compact SUV!

The Ford EcoSport: An Enduring Benchmark in the Compact SUV Segment

Ford has long cultivated a reputation for engineering vehicles that seamlessly blend rugged durability with engaging driving dynamics. From the agile Ikon and Fiesta to the commanding, full-sized Endeavour, the automaker has consistently catered to driving enthusiasts. In 2013, Ford catalyzed India's sub-4-meter crossover segment with the launch of the EcoSport. Facing minimal initial competition, the EcoSport captured the market with its striking aesthetics, robust build quality, and class-leading feature set.

Though designed as a tall crossover, the EcoSport defied segment norms by delivering near-perfect ride and handling alongside punchy powertrains. Over the years, it has undergone significant evolutions, transitioning from its celebrated 1.0L EcoBoost engine to the current BS6-compliant lineup. Despite a recent plateau in sales—driven largely by historical misconceptions regarding Ford's maintenance costs—the EcoSport remains a remarkably competent family car and a favorite among driving purists.

Evolution and Powertrain Dynamics

The EcoSport received a major facelift in 2017, introducing a sharper exterior design, an overhauled cabin, and the introduction of the 1.5-liter "Dragon" series three-cylinder petrol engine mated to a new 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission with paddle shifters. By 2020, the transition to stringent BS6 emissions regulations saw the retirement of the turbocharged EcoBoost, leaving two highly refined and capable powertrains in the lineup:

  • 1.5L Ti-VCT Petrol (Dragon Series): Delivering 122 PS and 149 Nm of torque, this three-cylinder engine punches above its weight with a strong mid-range that masks its three-cylinder architecture. It is available with a slick 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

  • 1.5L TDCi Diesel: Producing 100 PS and a robust 215 Nm of torque, this four-cylinder turbo-diesel remains the enthusiast’s choice. Paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox, it offers urgent mid-range acceleration and easily paces with newer segment rivals.

Built on Ford's highly acclaimed global Fiesta platform, the EcoSport’s driving dynamics are its defining characteristic. The suspension is adequately pliant at low speeds and exceptionally planted at highway velocities. Its electronic power steering is feather-light in city traffic yet weights up progressively to inspire confidence on the open road.

Design, Cabin Experience, and Practicality

Visually, the EcoSport retains a functional, butch design that offers better rough-road ability than many contemporary soft-roaders. Its signature tailgate-mounted spare wheel remains a unique, rugged touch in a segment that has largely moved away from traditional SUV styling.

Inside, the cabin focuses heavily on front-passenger comfort and ergonomic simplicity. The dashboard is constructed from hardy materials, centering around a prominent floating touchscreen. While the front seats offer exceptional support and height adjustability (standard from the Trend variant onward), the rear cabin is the vehicle's primary compromise. Though thigh support is commendable, limited legroom and a narrow cabin make seating three adults abreast a tight squeeze, an issue compounded by the absence of rear AC vents.

Features and Technology

Ford has democratized essential features across the EcoSport lineup, with the base Ambiente trim offering power windows, electric tailgate release, Bluetooth audio, and dual airbags as standard.

Moving up to the top-spec Titanium Sports and Titanium Plus variants unlocks a premium, technology-rich experience. Key highlights include:

  • Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen system featuring SYNC 3, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and FordPass connectivity.

  • Comfort & Convenience: Automatic climate control, electric sunroof, automatic headlamps and wipers, auto-folding ORVMs, and an electrochromic IRVM.

  • Exterior Enhancements: Projector headlamps with LED DRLs, 16-inch alloy wheels, and distinctive roof rails.

It should be noted that certain mid-spec Titanium trims feature an Android-based OS rather than standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and miss out on 60:40 split-folding rear seats.

Safety and Off-Road Capability

Safety has always been a cornerstone of the EcoSport's appeal. Standard safety equipment across all variants includes dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and a collapsible steering column.

The higher variants transform the EcoSport into one of the safest compact SUVs on the market, offering:

  • 6 airbags (side and curtain)

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control

  • Hill Launch Assist

  • ISOFIX child seat mounts

  • Ford MyKey and Emergency Assistance

Complementing its structural integrity is its off-road competence. With 200mm of ground clearance, electronic driver aids, and a class-leading water wading depth of 550mm, the EcoSport is well-equipped to handle broken tarmac and monsoon-flooded streets with ease.

Cost of Ownership and Final Verdict

While subpar marketing and lingering myths regarding service costs have hindered its current market share, Ford has aggressively addressed maintenance concerns. Initiatives like the Service Price Promise and Dial-A-Ford doorstep service have made the EcoSport's upkeep highly competitive, with spare parts often pricing out cheaper than segment leaders like Maruti Suzuki.

Ex-Showroom Pricing:

  • Petrol Manual: ?8.2 Lakh (Ambiente) to ?11.2 Lakh (Titanium Sports)

  • Petrol Automatic: ?10.66 Lakh (Titanium) to ?11.56 Lakh (Titanium Plus)

  • Diesel Manual: ?8.6 Lakh (Ambiente) to ?11.7 Lakh (Titanium Sports)

Despite being the oldest contender in the compact SUV space, the Ford EcoSport remains an exceptionally well-rounded package. For buyers willing to overlook a cramped rear seat in favor of superior driving dynamics, structural safety, and a commanding feature list, the EcoSport stands out as a high-value, enthusiast-approved choice.
