What's so special about Ford cars in India?

Cars offer a many utilities like transporting people and other things in a comfortable and civilised way. Many look at it as a ferry of some sort to reach from point A to B. Many others look at it as a symbol of status, luxury. Many, look at cars as mere appliances to get stuff done.

And then there are people who adore their cars, love them and live with them. People who love driving their machines. People who call themselves automobile enthusiasts, car lovers, petrolheads, etc.

Enthusiasts as we know are an endangered species today because very often, challenges and responsibilities in life ensure we leave aside our passion for short or long periods of time. The RPM needle doesn't go past the half mark. Fuel economy suddenly becomes the most important factor to consider in a car. Comfy suspension replaces the sporty suspension. That fun to drive factor is replaced by a dead, light and lifeless steering wheel. Life, then as we know gets dreary and lifeless.

But does it really have to be that way? Does life always have to go in that direction? Or is there a way where can have a bite from both worlds and maintain equilibrium? Of course, you still can’t expect good mileage if you rev it too much. But still, we think there's still hope for people like us. A way where we could maintain a fine balance between fun and responsibility. A balance between passion and practicality.

Often, we find this balance in cars from Ford. Of course not all of them from the fleet have this speciality where you get two things for the price of one. But mostly, they do have the capability to bring a smile on your face every time you take those cars out for a drive.

Ford Ecosport, Ford Fiesta, Ford Figo, Ford Freestyle. They've all been around us for a pretty long time. We’ve seen them evolve with us (except the Freestyle) but most importantly, what has stayed in this process of evolution is a communicative steering wheel that lets you feel every crack on the road, a suspension setup that offers decent comfort and enough stiffness to handle those curves. Horsepower figures are usually just enough to take you back by surprise and yet, there’s enough fuel left to do a last minute road trip.

This fusion of both worlds creates such a blend that driving these machines indeed feels very special. Not only this, We’ve mostly seen that cars from Ford India often offer safety features like 6 airbags, ARP, TCS, etc to even cars like the Freestyle! That says a lot about what the brand really prioritises on. We haven’t even moved onto the service costs yet because we feel that would be off topic.

With so many different choices in the market today and in this ever ending race between manufacturers to be on the top, what is often left behind is the essence of driving. Sadly, items like large infotainment systems, sunroof, projector head lamps, etc are features that are considered a priority by consumers while cars that offer an excellent driving experience with other satisfactory features are being ignored. To petrol heads like us, this is a worrying trend indeed. It is easy to find cars that go fast and have all the latest features. But it is indeed difficult to find great cars today that offer a blend of both worlds. Enthusiastic drivers and drivers’ cars then, are indeed endangered species.

    Mercedes Benz has revealed the new 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-class a couple months after the debut of the new-generation S-class. Following S-class tradition, the new Maybach S-class promises to raise the bar for luxury limousines by offering greater interior space and a host of new comfort-oriented features.


    At 5,469mm, the new Maybach S class is a  significant 180mm longer than the long-wheelbase version of the new S-class, which translates to the wheelbase, which is 3,396mm long – 31mm longer than even the outgoing Maybach S-class.

    However, Mercedes-Benz has only made small exterior additions to help distinguish the Maybach from lesser S-classes. These changes

    include the signature Maybach grille with slim vertical bars and a ‘Maybach’ inscription on top, a central chrome fin on the bonnet, a chrome applique for the lower parts of the front and rear bumpers, 34-spokealloy wheels, larger rear doors, Maybach insignias on the C-pillars and an optional two-tone paintjob with a ‘dividing line’, which can take up to a week to be completed.


    2021 Mercedes Benz Maybach S Class Interior 

    The Maybach S class retains the minimalistic interior design of the new S-class, while also including the second-gen MBUX infotainment system, a 12.8-inch tablet-style OLED infotainment screen, a 12.3-inch 3D digital instrument display and up to three screens for rear-seat passengers.

    The interior also gets wood finishes for the front seatbacks, with a matching finish applied to the rear-centre console as well. The new Maybach S-class gets individual ‘Executive’ rear seats and a Chauffeur package as standard. The backrest of the Executive seats can be reclined by as much as 43.5 degrees, and the backrest of the front passenger seat can be tilted forward by as much as 23 degrees to free up even more room at the back, allowing the rear-seat passenger to stretch out and relax.

    The Maybach also features a massage function integrated into the rear seat calf rests, a neck/shoulder heating function for the rear passengers, adaptive rear lighting, powered rear door opening and closing, an optional rear refrigeration compartment between the Executive seats and active road noise compensation included in the Burmester 4D sound system to produce counter-phased sound waves.

    Other features include an active ambient lighting system, which employs 253 LEDs, a head-up display with augmented reality, along with an optional Interior Assist function, which uses cameras to track movements of the car’s occupants and proactively trigger certain functions.


    The new Maybach S-class gets only a 4.0L twin turbo V8 assisted by a 48V ‘EQ Boost’ mild-hybrid system that can provide as much as 20hp in short bursts. This powertrain can produce upto 496hp and 700Nm torque. A 9-speed automatic gearbox is standard, along with all-wheel drive.

    The 2021 Maybach S-class also gets a rear-axle steering system, which turns the rear wheels by up to 10 degrees in the opposite direction of the front axle when parking, and by up to 4.5 degrees in the same direction as the front axle at speeds of over 60kph. This provide a tighter turning circle (11.2m) to the new Maybach S class.


     The new Maybach S class is equipped with 18 airbags as standard.

    Other safety features include the Pre-Safe Impulse side function (part of the E-Active Body Control suspension), which lifts the car up by 80mm when it detects an impending side-on crash. The E-Active Body Control suspension is a part of optional extras.

    Like the standard S-class, the new Maybach S-class, too, gets Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities, and by the second half of 2021, will be able to drive entirely on its own on certain stretches with dense traffic upto a max speed of 60kph in Germany. As with all Level 3 autonomous-certified vehicles, the Maybach S-class will require the driver to be alert at all times and ready to take to the controls again, should the situation demand it.

    Launch and price:

    The new Maybach S-class will be launched in the first half of 2021 initially in China. An Indian launch is likely to happen only by the year 2022, only after the launch of the standard S500. When launched, the new Maybach S-class will be priced at around Rs.2 crore (ex-showroom).

    The new generation 2021 Mahindra XUV500 has been on test for more than a couple years now. Various exterior and interior details have been revealed by numerous Spy shots and videos. However now, a new video has surfaced online, uploaded by Mohini Sharma on December 17th. The spy video gives us a first look at the entire interior of what seems to be the mid spec variant of the new XUV500.


    First, the interior seems to get a dual tone, beige and black theme. The dashboard features two massive screens for infotainment, including the digital cluster. This mid spec variant also

    has a panoramic sunroof along with beige leather seats. The front passenger seat also seems to get an adjustment flap-lever on the right side to provide extra legroom for the chauffeur-driven.

    The model seen in the video gets a flat-bottom leather wrapped steering wheel with cruise control and other controls as well. However the car gets only a manual switch for the day/night IRVM and a manual handbrake lever. The rear AC vents have moved towards the end of the center console instead of their earlier location on the B pillars. The top spec variants will get Dual-zone climate control as well. The seats seem larger than before and also seem to get longer squabs with better bolstering. The 2nd row seats get a 60:40 split folding function and a center armrest as well. Sadly, unlike the current model, the middle passenger doesn't seem to get a separate headrest.

    The 3rd row seats seem larger than before and get a 50:50 split folding function just like the current model. The boot space, though small, is larger than the current gen model. The top spec variant is expected to get a powered tailgate as well.


    After so many years of testing, the Mahindra XUV500 is near production ready. The exterior features LED headlights with signature LED DRLs, a large 7-slat grille, functional roof rails, 17” alloy wheels with 235 section tyres and all-wheel disc brakes as well.

    High-tech features:

    Mahindra also seems to be testing some advanced electronic safety and driver assistance systems on the new XUV500. These included a radar system, eyelid tracking tech and autonomous braking. Another feature which was reportedly getting tested was a 3D panoramic vision feature which would help the driver while reversing the car.

    However, these high-tech features are not likely to make it into production, atleast for now. That said, the new XUV500 is definitely expected to get a significant level of connected car tech and smart features.


    The 2021 XUV500 will get 2 engine options. The 2.2 litre mHawk diesel engine will be upgraded to produce around 170bhp of power, mated to 6 speed manual and automatic gearboxes. The new M-stallion 2.0L, 4 cylinder turbo petrol is also expected to be offered with the same transmission options. Similar to the Thar lifestyle SUV, this turbo petrol engine is expected to produce 150bhp of Max Power. Like the current gen model, the new XUV is also expected to offer AWD option on the top spec variants.

    Launch and pricing:

    The new XUV500 is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2021 and will compete against rivals like the Tata Harrier and the Gravitas, Jeep Compass, MG Hector and Hector plus, Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta. Similar to the first gen model, we can expect a ground breaking pricing strategy for the new gen XUV500 as well. This new second generation model is expected to be priced between ?13-22L, comprising a lot of variants.

    After it was stopped in 1996, Ford has been planning to re- introduce the Bronco. News is that the Bronco has a smaller sibling as well – the Bronco Sport which will be available with three different types of grilles- Modern, Classic, and Custom.

    Ford says the new Bronco will be a body- on- frame 4x4 built to take on some of the toughest terrains. Features include a solid rear axle and an Air Roof while Ford’s Terrain Management System, Trail Control and a novel active suspension could be optional features.

    Also on the cards could be a more hardcore version of

    the Bronco called the Wolftrak and a raptor version most probably having a V8 engine. Speaking of the looks, the Bronco sports a boxy and edgy design with round headlamps, thereby resembling with the original Bronco.

    Many patent applications suggest what appears to be a very unique concept. Several parts of the Bronco’s body could be removable like doors and the roof to allow open- air motoring. Ford has also patented a safety system which uses telescopic beams to protect drivers in a crash when the doors are removed. The Bronco could come with 10 colours as per the leaked color palette.

    With the ongoing trend of Ford’s EcoBoost Engines, the Bronco could get one as well. It could most likely receive a 2.3 litre EcoBoost unit that produces 270 Horsepower and 420 NM of torque mated to a 10 Speed Automatic. A hybrid and a V8 engine are also expected.

    It is also highly likely that the Ford Bronco could receive the Twin Turbocharged 2.7 litre V6 engine from the F-150 that produces 325 HP and 542 NM of torque. The off roader would be produced at Ford’s plant in Wayne, Michigan. From the looks of it, Ford plans to offer the Bronco in America initially as there are no reports of plans to offer the Bronco in other markets globally. However, Ford has filed for a Trademark on Bronco in Europe. That should say a lot.

    The Bronco could be priced around 35,000$ in USA. It was expected to be featured at the 2020 New York Auto Show that got cancelled. We expect the official unveiling to occur sometime in the last quarter of 2020.
